President Bola Tinubu has presented a ₦1.78 trillion budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the National Assembly.
In a letter read on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Tinubu urged lawmakers to expedite the budget’s passage. He emphasized the need to facilitate critical development projects within the nation’s capital.
Tinubu stated that the budget presentation was in compliance with Section 299 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the president to lay the FCT’s budget before the legislature.
The president’s letter highlighted that the proposed budget would significantly boost key sectors, including health, social welfare, agriculture, and employment. “The passage of the budget would facilitate investment in health and social welfare, increase agricultural production, and improve the creation of jobs,” the letter stated.
Providing a breakdown of the budget estimates, Tinubu noted that 85% of the total allocation would be dedicated to completing ongoing infrastructure and development projects. The remaining 15% would fund new initiatives.
He appealed to the parliament to accelerate the passage of the budget proposal, saying, “I urge the National Assembly to give this budget the urgent attention it deserves, in the interest of accelerating development within the FCT.” Sources and related content
