Reports from counter-insurgency publication, Zagazola has confirmed that armed militants affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched a deadly attack on a military post in Lanfièra, Sourou Province, in north-western Burkina Faso. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the deaths of dozens of soldiers and left several others critically injured.
According to local sources, the militants, who arrived in large numbers, overpowered the troops after a fierce gun battle and took control of the camp. This marks the second attack on the Lanfièra outpost in less than a month, raising concerns about the security situation in the region.
The attackers destroyed several military vehicles, including armored personnel carriers and trucks, and ransacked the military post before setting it ablaze. They made off with significant amounts of military equipment and supplies, including four military vehicles, two DShK heavy machine guns, one mortar, seven rocket-propelled grenade launchers, eight PK machine guns, and 34 Kalashnikov rifles. The assailants also seized dozens of magazines, seven crates of assorted ammunition, a surveillance drone, military uniforms, boots, vests, mobile phones, and other personal items belonging to soldiers.
While the Burkinabè military authorities have yet to release an official statement, sources within the region confirmed that reinforcement operations are underway, and aerial surveillance is being considered to track the militants. The withdrawal of French troops from the Sahelian states has emboldened terrorists, making such attacks more frequent and brazen.
