Putin Pledges Continued Support to Burkina Faso Amid Growing Ties

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a meeting with military leader of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traore at the Kremlin, where Traore is visiting to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Soviet Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The meeting highlighted the strengthening relations between the two nations, with both leaders expressing their commitment to cooperation in various areas.

Putin warmly welcomed Traore, acknowledging the contribution of Burkinabe soldiers to the defeat of German Nazism and expressing gratitude for Traore’s participation in the anniversary celebrations. He emphasized the common goal of fighting terrorism and extremism, pledging Russia’s continued support to Burkina Faso in restoring the rule of law and constitutional order.

The Russian leader highlighted the progress made in expanding cooperation across various areas, including economic, educational, and healthcare initiatives. He announced that Russia would more than double its government scholarship quota for Burkinabe citizens and provide humanitarian aid, including a shipment of food.

Traore, speaking in Russian, thanked Putin for the invitation and praised Russia’s resilience in the face of sanctions. He expressed his admiration for Russia’s history and culture, highlighting the importance of cooperation in science, education, and technology. Traore requested Russia’s assistance in transferring technology and know-how to Burkina Faso, particularly in the fields of industry, engineering, and education.

The Burkinabe leader emphasized the importance of building a strong army to combat terrorism, which he attributed to imperialism. He also stressed the need for Russia’s help in establishing university branches in Burkina Faso to provide practical training for students.

Both leaders expressed optimism about the prospects of their cooperation, with Putin noting the valuable format of consultations between Russia and the Confederation of Sahel States. The meeting underscored the growing friendship between Russia and Burkina Faso, with both nations committed to mutual benefit and cooperation. The Burkinabe leader also attended the grand parade and wreath laying ceremony at Red Square.
