The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has made a surprise appearance at a crucial high level expanded PDP Governors’ Forum meeting in Abuja on Sunday.
Wike, a key figure in the rebellious G5 faction, has maintained a controversial alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while serving as a minister under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. His presence at the high-stakes PDP gathering has left party members and political analysts questioning whether he is genuinely seeking reconciliation or operating as a mole for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, included six serving PDP governors: Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). Notably absent was Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who recently described the PDP as a “faulty vehicle,” fueling speculation about his own political leanings.
Wike arrived late to the meeting, joining his former G5 allies—ex-governors Sam Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu)—who were already seated. Governor Makinde, the only remaining G5 member still in office, has acted as a mediator between Wike’s faction and the mainstream PDP.
While some analysts see Wike’s attendance as a sign of possible reconciliation, others view it with deep suspicion, arguing that his open declaration to work with the APC in 2027 makes him an adversary rather than a genuine party member. His critics within the PDP accuse him of being a destabilizing force, pointing to his role in the party’s internal crises and recent high-profile defections, including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The meeting also featured prominent PDP figures such as National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and former governors including Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Makarfi, and Aminu Tambuwal. The gathering underscored the party’s desperate bid to stem further disintegration, as fears grow over a potential mass exodus of leaders ahead of the next election cycle.
