Ahead of the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir, Kano State has declared June 4 to 16 as public holidays for all primary and secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, in the state, Ali Makoda, made the announcement in a press statement signed by Balarabe Kiru, the ministry’s Public Enlightenment Director, on Sunday.

Makoda said the break does not alter any aspect of the 2024/2025 academic calendar, including official holidays.

The Commissioner also stated that students in boarding school, will observe the break until June 15, while day students are expected to return on June 16, as he asked parents and guardians of boarding students to collect their wards on the morning of June 4.

While thanking the parents and guardians in the process, Makoda urged them to ensure that the children resume swiftly after the break, as he also wished all the pupil and students a peaceful and joyful Eid celebration.

The 2025 Eid-el-Kabir (Eid al-Adha) is scheduled to be observed on June 6, with an additional public holiday on June 7, to mark the annual one of the two major Islamic festivals, the other being Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

Though, the federal government usually declares only a two-day public holiday for Eid as it does for Christmas, the Kano 12-day holiday adds to the growing pattern of extended school breaks in Northern Nigeria for religious observances.

During the 2025 Ramadan season, the governments of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi states mandated the closure of all public and private schools for up to five weeks to accommodate the Muslim fasting period.

Slyke Bulletin recalls that the Hisbah Board, an Islamic morality enforcement agency in Katsina, issued a directive for all private schools to shut down during Ramadan, warning that non-compliance would not be tolerated, which sparked significant controversy, drawing criticism from various stakeholders in the education sector.
