In a significant diplomatic move, Nigeria’s President has signaled the country’s intent to play a more proactive role in global affairs, particularly within the BRICS economic bloc. Speaking at the BRICS summit in Rio, Brazil, the President expressed Nigeria’s commitment to emerging solutions rooted in solidarity, self-reliance, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
As a partner invitee to the BRICS summit, Nigeria is seeking to leverage the bloc’s influence to drive financial restructuring and reevaluation of the global economic structure. The President emphasized the need for BRICS to address the specific needs and concerns of youths, who make up 70% of Nigeria’s population, amidst rising poverty and unemployment in the country.
The President highlighted Nigeria’s homegrown initiatives aimed at accelerating renewable energy, mainstreaming climate action, strengthening urban resilience, and expanding healthcare access. “The world is changing. Nigeria will not be left behind. We will help lead the way,” he declared.
This diplomatic overture is seen as a bid to attract investment and attention from BRICS member countries, potentially paving the way for Nigeria to tap into the bloc’s vast resources and expertise.
