President Bola Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on Nigeria’s Super Falcons and their coaching staff in recognition of their winning their 10th African Women’s Nations Cup title. The Super Falcons fought back heroically from a 2-0 deficit to overpower the Moroccan women in a pulsating encounter that ended 3-2.

During a grand reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President also announced generous rewards, including three-bedroom apartments in the Renewed Hope Estate for each player and technical crew member, as well as cash awards of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per coach.

In his address, President Tinubu praised the team for inspiring millions of Nigerians, particularly young girls, by proving that dreams are achievable through hard work and dedication. “You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable.

“You have inspired me, too. And it’s great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. You represent that hope. You ignited that hope. And we will continue to encourage you, the next generation, and other generations after you,” he said.

Reflecting on the emotional final match, the President admitted he had been hesitant to watch, fearing the tension would affect his health. “When we were down 2-0, I was restless, but your resilience lifted my spirits—and that of the entire nation,” he recounted, adding humorously that the First Lady, who rarely watches football, abandoned his dinner to cheer for the team.

Further celebrating their achievement, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), announced an additional ₦10 million donation to each player and coach on behalf of the 36 state governors.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also lauded the Super Falcons as role models, praising their courage, teamwork, and unshakable determination. “You proved that it’s never over until it’s over,” she said.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, vowing continued investment in women’s football and youth talent programs to nurture future champions.
