A devastating boat accident occurred in Nigeria’s north-central Niger State, resulting in at least 60 deaths and dozens of rescues. The vessel capsized after striking a submerged tree stump near Gausawa community in Borgu Local Government Area while traveling from Tungan Sule in Malale district to Dugga for a condolence visit.
The incident, which happened around 11 a.m., highlights the recurring issue of boat accidents in Nigeria, often caused by lax safety enforcement, overcrowding, and poorly maintained vessels. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency deployed emergency personnel and local divers to search for victims, confirming 29 deaths, 50 rescues, and two missing persons.
Abdullahi Baba Ara, chair of Borgu Local Government Area, reported that the death toll had risen to 60, with 10 people found in serious condition and many still being sought. Sa’adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi, was at the scene shortly after the accident and reported recovering 31 corpses from the river. Four victims were buried on Tuesday according to Islamic rites, with women and children making up the majority of the deceased.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities investigating the cause of the accident. Overloading and poor safety measures are likely contributing factors. Boat accidents are frequent in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season, emphasizing the need for stricter safety enforcement and better maintenance of vessels
