Plans Abuja March
ABUJA – A coalition coordinated by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has initiated a global online protest campaign, marking the start of a week-long digital mobilization for the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The movement, operating under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, aims to blanket social media with demands for his release ahead of a planned physical march to the Aso Rock Villa on October 20.
In an open call to action circulated widely on Monday, Sowore declared that the “online phase of the protest has officially begun.” The statement from the coordinator urged “online protesters, activists, citizens, and allies everywhere to turn every platform into a space for truth and resistance.”
The campaign targets major social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Organizers have instructed supporters to maintain a “clear and relentless” message, using the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow hashtag to ensure maximum visibility in the lead-up to the Abuja demonstration.
“The goal is simply to keep the demand for justice alive and visible every single day until the government ends the unjust and unlawful incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Sowore’s statement read. It emphasized that “everyone can play a part by posting, sharing, tweeting, and amplifying the message.”
The digital strategy frames the internet as a new front for activism, stating, “From today, the internet becomes our rally ground—a united digital front for freedom and conscience.” The message concludes with a rallying cry: “We are online; we are everywhere, and we are unstoppable.”
This coordinated online push, spearheaded by Sowore, signals a strategic effort to sustain public and international pressure on the Nigerian government regarding Kanu’s continued detention. The success of this digital campaign in setting the stage for the physical march in the nation’s capital next week remains a key focus for the movement.
