…Lawyer Prevented From Seeing Him
ABUJA – In a dramatic development, prominent activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore was arrested by armed police officers on Thursday immediately after attending a court proceeding at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore was at the court to stand in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Arrest Without Immediate Charge
The arrest occurred within the court premises shortly after the session. Security operatives apprehended Sowore, insisting he accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. When pressed for the reason behind the arrest, an officer stated they were “acting on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police.”
Sowore questioned the legality of the detention, noting the absence of a formal invitation letter, but was eventually taken away in a police van after insisting his lawyer be present.
Lawyer Decries “Preposterous” Arrest, Denied Access
Sowore’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has strongly condemned the arrest, calling it “preposterous” and accusing the police and the Tinubu administration of “making a mockery of our judicial system.” In a statement on social media, Effiong demanded his client’s immediate release.
In a concerning update, Effiong later reported being denied access to his client at the former SARS detention facility in Guzape, Abuja. Officers on duty allegedly required “clearance from the FCT Police Command Headquarters” before granting access.
This developing story raises immediate questions about the grounds for Sowore’s arrest and the circumstances surrounding his detention.
