In commemoration of Democracy Day, the Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, a public holiday to mark the occasion. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary to the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule, praising their resilience, strength, and courage. “June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo also said, “Under President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria remains dedicated to democratic principles, where the “freely expressed choices of its citizens shape the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural direction.”
This year’s Democracy Day celebration comes hot on the heels of another public holiday, as Monday was already designated a holiday to celebrate the Islamic Eid-el-Kabir festival.
With this announcement, two out of the five weekdays between June 8 and 15 will be public holidays. The declaration underscores the significance of democracy in Nigeria’s nation-building process
