Sensitization on early signs of floods by the National Orientation Agency, (NOA) has begun as part its campaign to communities, to prevent future occurrences and mitigate its impact on residents of Mokwa Local Government Area, (LGA) in Niger State.

Recall that Slyke Bulletin last week reported that death from the recent flooding rose to 200 while hundreds of residents got displaced from Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa LGA according to National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), which led to the low key celebration of the Eid-el-Kabir.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMET in its annual flood prediction, identified 12 states as high-risk, prompting the early warnings sensitization with local authorities by the NOA.

The NOA DG, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the disclosure during a sympathy visit to victims of the flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger.

He said, “It is very important to prevent disasters when we listen and take precautions.

“We have mobilized our staff at the state and local government levels to work with other stakeholders.

“They are to ensure those who lost their lives are taken care of as well those who sustained injuries are also taken care of.

He explained that the NOA is working with other sister agencies to fumigate affected areas and ensure safety in Mokwa town, adding that the agencies had also mobilized its staff to conduct early warning system in flood prone areas.

According to him, NOA is working with local government authorities to sensitize communities on flood safety and prevention.

Issa-Onilu further reiterated that the agency would continue to educate people on flood dangers and ensure people take necessary precautions.
