Arsenal’s pre-season took another dramatic turn as Villarreal edged a five-goal thriller 3-2 at the Emirates, with new signing Viktor Gyökeres’ full debut overshadowed by 15-year-old wonderkid Max Dowman’s latest star turn.
The Gunners faithful got their first proper look at £45m striker Gyökeres, but it was a familiar face in opposition colors who stole the show early on. Nicolas Pépé, Arsenal’s former record £72m signing now with Villarreal, opened the scoring on 18 minutes, pouncing on Pape Gueye’s header that cannoned off the post.

Mikel Arteta’s defensive concerns grew when Gerard Moreno’s saved effort fell kindly for Karl Etta Eyong to nod home Villarreal’s second just before the half-hour mark. But Arsenal responded instantly through their set-piece mastery – new midfield anchor Christian Nørgaard powering home Gabriel Martinelli’s corner to halve the deficit.
The second half saw Gyökeres denied his dream Emirates moment by Villarreal keeper Luis Junior, before former Premier League winger Arnaut Danjuma appeared to kill the game with a clinical breakaway finish.
Just as Arsenal’s attack looked toothless, teenage sensation Dowman electrified the crowd once more. The academy starlet – who won plaudits in Singapore – terrorized Villarreal’s defense and earned a late penalty, continuing his remarkable rise.
While the result extends Arsenal’s winless pre-season, Dowman’s emergence offers real excitement. With Gyökeres still finding his feet and defensive issues persisting, Arteta has work to do before the season opener – but may have uncovered English football’s next superstar in the process.
