Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a powerful message at a massive military parade in Beijing, flanked by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. Xi warned that the world is at a crossroads, facing a choice between peace and war, dialogue or confrontation, and win-win or zero-sum outcomes. The parade, marking 80 years since Japan’s defeat in World War Two, showcased China’s military might and diplomatic clout.
The event was attended by over 25 leaders, including Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto, who made a surprise appearance despite widespread protests at home. Western leaders largely shunned the event due to the presence of Putin and Kim, who are considered pariahs in the West due to the Ukraine war and Kim’s nuclear ambitions.

Xi, dressed in a tunic suit reminiscent of former leader Mao Zedong’s style, inspected the troops and cutting-edge military equipment, including hypersonic missiles, underwater drones, and a weaponized “robot wolf”. The 70-minute showcase featured aerial displays, marching troops, and the release of 80,000 “peace” birds.

During the parade, Xi engaged in conversations with Putin and Kim, marking the first time the trio has appeared together in public. Putin later thanked Kim for North Korea’s support in the Ukraine war, while Kim expressed willingness to help Russia. US President Donald Trump responded to the event on Truth Social, saying “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America”. The Kremlin dismissed Trump’s remarks as ironic.

Xi emphasized China’s commitment to standing on the right side of history, adding that humanity must not return to the “law of the jungle”. The parade highlighted China’s growing military power and diplomatic influence, with analysts watching for potential signals of closer defense relations between China, Russia, and North Korea.
