Abuja — The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, on Monday inaugurated a new governing board for the National Pension Commission (PenCom), urging members to uphold transparency, accountability and strong oversight in managing Nigeria’s pension system.

The inauguration, held at the SGF’s office in Abuja, signals the Federal Government’s renewed commitment under President Bola Tinubu to protect retirement savings, clear outstanding pension liabilities and ensure prompt, dignified payments to retirees.

Speaking at the ceremony, Akume said the board’s mandate is clearly defined by the Pension Reform Act 2014, stressing that members must focus on policy direction and oversight without interfering in the commission’s day-to-day operations.

He emphasised that the administration expects the highest standards of integrity and sound judgment from the board to strengthen public confidence in the pension system.

The 15-member board is chaired by Opeyemi Agbaje, alongside key officials including Hafiz Ibrahim (Technical Commissioner), Samuel Chigozie Uwanda (Inspectorate Commissioner), Charles Emukowhate (Finance Commissioner) and Bello Malabu (Administration Commissioner).

Other members represent major institutions and stakeholders such as the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Central Bank of Nigeria, Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigerian Exchange Group and the National Insurance Commission, among others.

Responding on behalf of the board, Agbaje pledged strict adherence to corporate governance principles, assuring the government of a clear separation between oversight responsibilities and management functions within the commission. He also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in the board.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana, highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening PenCom’s capacity to safeguard pension funds for both current and future retirees.

Also speaking, PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran assured the board of management’s cooperation, expressing optimism that the new leadership would deliver impactful reforms, innovation and improved institutional performance.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the SGF’s office and management staff of PenCom.
