Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the alarming poverty rate in Nigeria’s rural areas. According to a recent World Bank report, over 75% of rural Nigerians live in poverty, while 41.3% of the urban population also falls below the poverty line.
Speaking on the issue, Obi emphasized the need for urgent action and a shift in government priorities. He advocated for increased investment in critical sectors such as health, education, and poverty alleviation. Obi criticized the current focus on non-developmental projects, citing examples such as conference centers, government houses, and official vehicles.
Instead, Obi suggested that the government should prioritize human capital, education, and healthcare. He also emphasized the importance of supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to create jobs and lift people out of poverty.
“The decisions we make—what we build, fund, and focus on—must align with the pressing needs of the people,” Obi stated. He concluded that a new Nigeria is possible with a redirected national focus and a commitment to addressing the root causes of poverty.
